About Me

Avery Carter

Avery Carter cannot remember a time where they didn’t want to create stories. They kept wondering what to do with their life, and finally settled on not settling.

They are an English teacher and walking art museum, covered in tattoos, ocean blue hair tied out of their face, and square, purple glasses. They proudly proclaim that they are the “coolest person you know” to their students, and spend each day trying to live up to that title. They are a nonbinary queer author living in South Korea with their wife and two dogs. They spend their days writing new stories, and teaching their students to love words as much as they do.

Avery Carter: Author, Teacher, Part-time elephant

My name is Avery Carter (they/them/ze/zem), and I am a fantasy and science fiction author. Originally from the United States, I made the choice to emigrate to South Korea, and have since been living and thriving on this side of the Pacific. Most of my books center around queer, female protagonists experiencing magic in everyday things. My goal is to create fantasy and science fiction novels where being queer isn’t a revolutionary choice, and where a queer identity is more than about just coming out. Sure, you’re a queer disaster, but you’re a queer disaster with a big-ass sword, or with magical powers, or maybe you’re a shapeshifter. Whatever your identity, you’ll find your story here.

In 2020, I began self-publishing, while balancing a teaching career and completing an MFA program. It’s a lot of plates spinning, but luckily I’m enough of a clown to keep them all going. I met my wife here, and after about a month of courting, we already knew that we would get married.

I live in a small town on the west coast of South Korea, and I spend my days enjoying the sea breezes and relatively mild weather with my wife and our dogs.

Bobo (left) and Grace (right)

Grace and Bobo are a pair of rescue dogs that saved us as much as we saved them. Grace was my dog originally, and Bobo was my wife’s. After a year of smelling each other on our clothes after we came home, we finally moved in together, and they got to meet each other. They were best friends right away, and now are the closest pair of dogs we’ve ever seen. We usually call them the Potato (Bobo) and the Human Child (Grace).
